Governor General's Medals in Architecture


Winners of Governor General's Medals in Architecture represent 'human genius'
Twelve winners of the Governor General's Medals in Architecture have been announced. The medals are awarded by the Royal Architectural Institution of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Council for the Arts. A panel of five distinguished international architects recognised the works for their outstanding achievement in recently built projects. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada stated that this year's twelve recipients "make us appreciate the degree to which Canadian architects have transformed the places where we live, work, share culture and come together into a celebration of beauty and human genius."

The winners are:

Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, University of Toronto (Toronto, ON) - architectsAlliance & Behnisch Architekten

Trent Chemical Sciences Building (Peterborough, ON) - Teeple Architects Inc. and associate architects Shore Tilbe & Irwin

The diversity in appeal of groundbreaking design was noted by RAIC President Kiyoshi Matsuzaki, he said: “It is very encouraging to note that our educational, cultural and community institutions have embraced inspirational contemporary Canadian architecture.

“This year’s winners include buildings for higher education, community and cultural centres, a church and a museum as well as two residences. The award-winning projects are indeed world-class and demonstrate that, as architects, we Canadians can create buildings that are second to none.”

The medals will be presented by Her Excellency at 6pm on October 16 at Rideau Hall.
