National Museum of China Expansion, Beijing, China

Winning design demonstrates an understanding of the historic context of the site and provides a contemporary design that complements the building’s traditional Chinese architecture
RTKL, a global architecture and engineering practice, headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland has won an international competition to expand the National Art Museum in China. The Museum, which was completed in 1962 as one of ten buildings commissioned for the commemoration of the ten-year anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, is one of the largest art galleries in China. According to the judges, RTKL’s winning scheme, which was chosen from more than 100 entries, demonstrates an understanding of the historic context of the site and provides a contemporary design that complements the building’s traditional Chinese architecture. The expansion, which will connect to the east wing of the Museum through underground spaces, will provide permanent and temporary galleries and a significant amount of public spaces, social programs and collection storage. The local architect for the project is Beijing Institute of Architecture
