Bungalows in Elounda, Crete, Greece

Intimate bungalows with wide sea vistas
Well known for its beautiful setting, Elounda Beach, in Crete, Greece provides an amazing location for architects Davide Macullo and Makis Lahanas’s contemporary bungalows. The project, currently under construction, aims to link the scale of the land with that of the sea and to provide intimacy at the same time as allowing a wide view of the horizon. Set back on the coast the houses face the water as though they were anchored yachts, whilst on the land side they suggest a more urban atmosphere. Newly created pathways provide open views to the sea and are reminiscent of old pathways in coastal villages with a contemporary twist. The strong geometry of the single bungalows create a fluent landscape towards the sea through the sequence of rounded surfaces and 45° walls. The use of dark grey stone for the cladding of the exterior walls set the new buildings in harmony with the natural surroundings and the use of natural materials such as wood and leather creates a warm atmosphere within.
